Through the Looking Glass and What I Found There

‘Through The Looking Glass and What I Found There’ is a conversation about my personal relationship with food and literature as a child. The work exists within a scene in which the items logically would be found. It creates a wondrous experience with glistening glass and gold to transport the viewer into the mindset of their younger self. With the child’s height of the desk, the viewer is required to put themselves in the role of a child in order to view the work.

The centerpiece for ‘Through the Looking Glass and What I Found There’ is a mold blown and gold leafed book filled with glass petit fours. The mold blown book was designed by creating a 3D model of the book to the correct size to fit the petit fours. The 3D model was then 3D printed using a Makerbot printer with PLA as the material. A mold was then made of the 3D print and was then able to be used for the wax working process. Molds were made from the waxes and the typical mold blowing glass process followed. The book is composed of two halves which were cut and gold leafed. Cast glass petit fours were placed inside of the book.
